Liverpool Library exhibition celebrates older Australians

A free photographic exhibition at Liverpool City and Moorebank Library branches, funded by NSW Department of Communities and Justice, is set to celebrate the lives of older people and challenge community perceptions of seniors.

The Art of Ageing 2020 features the works of six photographers in 24 portraits depicting older people and telling their life stories.

“These beautiful portraits really capture the diversity of older Australians and celebrate their contributions to their communities through the wonderful lives they’ve led so far and the very full and rich lives they continue to lead now," Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.

"The portraits include a broad range of older people with occupations as diverse as a chef, viticulturalist, teacher, retired panel beater and even well-known film, TV and stage actor Geoff Morrell.

“I invite everyone, whatever your age, to challenge your perceptions and discover the full potential of our older Australians."
The exhibition features work by NSW photographers Kerri Ambler, Tina Milson, Julie Slavin, Tim White, Trevor Green and Tayla Martin, and was curated by Sue Mitchell.

It was commissioned by the NSW Government to celebrate the contribution older people make to their communities and increase their participation in the arts and cultural activities, as part of the NSW Ageing Strategy.

NSW Acting Minister for Seniors Geoff Lee said "The exhibition proved age was no barrier to enjoying a full life."

“The experience of growing older is unique to every individual whether they are artists, athletes, entrepreneurs or volunteers,” Mr Lee said.
“The images in The Art of Ageing tackle misconceptions about the lives of seniors and give people insight and inspiration about what is possible.”

The Liverpool City Library exhibition will feature 24 portraits, while the Moorebank Library exhibition will host a concertina display of the works.
