The journey through the heart of Australia

The Ghan logoThe Ghan derives its name from the pioneering Afghan cameleers who helped blaze paths into the Red Centre of Australia. Today, you can make this historic journey to Alice Springs and Darwin in air-conditioned style and comfort. Through the vast sheep and cattle stations and rugged desert ranges to the lush tropics, this legendary journey is arguably the best way to cross the country.

The GhanBoarding The Ghan in Adelaide or Darwin, you'll experience one of the most fascinating great train journeys of the world. Stopovers in Adelaide are available for guests travelling to or from Sydney on the Indian Pacific and Melbourne on The Overland.

The Ghan offers two accommodation options - Gold Service and Red Service.

Gold Kangaroo ServiceGold Service is the ideal option for a rail adventure with style and romance. Gold Service guests can choose from twin or single sleeper cabins. The difference relates to showers and toilets which are located at the end of each carriage.

Whistle stop tours can be taken in a range of stops along the way. Discover the historic outback town of Broken Hill, charming city of Adelaide and the fascinating Super Pit located in the mining town of Kalgoorlie. Tours are reasonable in cost and must be purchased on board the train.

Hotel to station transfers and visa versa, are available from most central Darwin hotels.
