Cycling for over 50's

There is no reason not to keep cycling beyond 50 years and the time we spent with the South Sydney Senior Cyclists (SSSC) proves they are having a great time on their rides. Arthur, at 84 years of age, was the senior of the group and he definitely set the pace, both leading the way and telling the most jokes!

One of the best ways of living a long and healthy life is through regular exercise.

Cycling is an excellent way to get fit, stay happy and healthy and reverse some effects of ageing. The more active you are, the more oxygen that flows through your body and to the brain, which all leads to a happier and healthier you. Bill’s enjoyment and quality of life has improved significantly since he started riding after two heart operations. Geraldine has stopped taking medication and controlled her diabetes after taking up regular cycling. The biggest benefit for everyone, however, is clearly the enjoyment they get from each other’s company.

Getting started is often the biggest worry, but the bicycle organisations in each state will help you wherever you are. Your local bike shop will also be able to point you in the right direction, as well as assist you choose the right bike for your needs. Most bike shop staff are involved in the bicycle activities in their local area, and should be one of your first points of contact.

Once you’re active, you will find that you have more energy, sleep better, fell more self confident, have reduced stress levels and you can more easily control your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol.

Never learnt to ride a bike? Easy! Tandems (bikes built for two riders) are a great option, find a partner for the front and start riding. Or improve your current bicycle skills at one of the many courses run by the various organisations in your State.

Finding places to ride used to be a real problem, but local councils are increasingly providing off road cycle paths and on road bike lanes to encourage more people to ride for pleasure, sport and transport. Most councils will be able to supply you with information on the cycleways in your area.

Some tips for starting out cycling

  • Finding an off-road path or cycleway is a great way to start. Choose a flat, easy route to begin with, start slowly and try to make cycling a regular habit rather than an occasional one.
  • Finding a friend or cycling group to ride with will double your enjoyment and is a great way to make new friends.
  • Get your local bike shop to assist with the choice of a bike to suit the sort of riding you want to do. Remember that bicycle design has changed a lot over the years. Today you can find power assisted bicycles and bicycles with three wheels, assisting older people with their balance.
  • When riding on roads remember to wear visible clothing, be aware of the traffic around you and ride predicably at all times.
  • Don’t forget that as a bicycle rider you are also classed as a vehicle on the roads, so you must obey the rules like any other road user. This includes wearing an approved helmet.
  • If you have any concerns about your fitness for cycling see your GP for a check up.
  • Remember to start out slowly and gradually increase your riding.
