Financial support and health care

If you are caring for a family member or friend with a disability or someone who needs assistance for everyday living, you will probably need to access the healthcare benefits provided by Medicare and other Australian government schemes, on their behalf.

Medicare provides:

  • Free or subsidised treatment
  • Free treatment in public hospitals for public patients
  • 75% of scheduled fees for some costs to private patients

To access these benefits the person you are caring for will need a current Medicare card.
