Contact your system administrator

Dear NetGuide,
I want to transfer my Internet connection settings to my new computer, but when I try it says to contact my system administrator. Who or what is that?

You are most likely using Windows 2000 or XP. It requires system administrator "permissions" before you can change system settings, install software etc.

The system administrator is usually a person who has more power or control of your machine. In the case of a home machine, this can be you. A system administrator uses a special system administrator account and this account should already be set up on your machine.

As this is probably not the only time you will require system administrator permissions, we suggest you go back to you computer shop where you bought this computer from and:

  1. Ask them to tell you what the username and password is for the system administrator account.
  2. Ask them to give your normal login account administrator rights or privileges.

The second step you can probably do yourself, once you've done number one.
