 False Update Notification
Dear NetGuide,
I have been on a Web site that advised that I needed to update several drivers. To the best of my knowledge I have already downloaded these.
Are the drivers automatically installed once downloaded, which I think is what I've been doing, or are they lurking in the hidden depths of my machine waiting for me to install them? I've done all the updating driver bits but my system tells me that it cannot find more up-to-date ones than I'm already using.
Those warnings you saw on the site are most likely ads. A lot of these advertisements pretend to be related to your system and trick you to click on them.
A lot of people get tricked, and that is why these ads still exist. If you look at system error messages versus pop-up windows from the Internet, you will see how different they are. Next time you see one, have a closer look and you'll learn that the messages from the Internet are actually enclosed inside an Internet Explorer (browser) window.
There are normally two groups of software you update: the system software (i.e. your operating system like Windows), or drivers for your devices. For Windows you go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com where you scan, choose the updates you want to download and it will automatically install them for you.
For the driver updates that you download directly from the hardware manufacturers’ sites (e.g. www.dynalink.com for your Dynalink modem), you will need to double click on the file you've downloaded to install the updates.
