My useless anti-virus?

Dear NetGuide,
I just did a scan on my computer for viruses and found three. How would these have got onto my system if we have anti-virus protection running all the time?

Having an anti-virus software package installed on your system doesn't make it 100% protected. Even a system with an anti-virus package that gets updated everyday is not 100% protected. Also, an anti-virus is useless without its virus definitions and this is what gets updated every time you run an update online. What possibly happened to you was your system wasn't updated during this period.

So what good is an anti-virus? An up-to-date anti-virus will guard your system from known viruses or virus-like activities. However, completely novel viruses are the ones that tend to hit us by surprise, and there is no way an anti-virus can block them until your anti-virus is updated with a new virus definition set.
